This past week in my GNED (Stories of Diverse Media), we were asked to watch Game of Thrones. I was skeptical at first, it didn’t seem like a show I would be into.
After watching half of the season, I realized it was a lot more interesting than I originally thought.
Now after watching the complete first season, I’ve developed a love for it.
I didn’t think I would like it as I’m not a fan of the whole, mythical medieval world to begin with, but I definitely misjudged it.
The television series deals with more than just magic and boring history, it relays a constant theme and message back to the audience.
Season one introduces the game which revolves around the question “who will end up on top?”
The game is influenced by the author of the books Game of Thrones is based off of, George R.R Martin.
He has said “the horrors of human history derive not from orcs and Dark Lords, but from ourselves.”
This quote relays back to the reoccurring theme in the show which is the questions of power and how far you will go for it.
By “the horrors of human history” I think Martin was mentioning the need and want for power which has been a constant piece of our history. Martin mentioning the horrors of our history are not derived from ourselves, tells us the show is a mirror, and it is showing us what we are doing wrong and how we are dooming ourselves.
The show brings attention to the power crazed society we live in. It displays an accurate point of view and sheds light on the hunger people have to obtain power and how it causes misery to the rest of society.
The show outlines everybody wanting power, the warfare and the misery it causes.
I think society has become power crazed and people don’t realize the power they want can cause harm and damage to society. Sometimes the wrong people can get a hold of power and when they do it can do more damage than we think.
Game of Thrones outlines power as a bad thing, not only when obtained by the wrong person, but in general. Power is a negative thing which influences society in a damaging manner.
In the end, I did enjoy the show and will continue to watch it as I find it very interesting. It shows the reality of the world we live in where everyone craves power. Power causes pain and misery all over the world
Power is something which has become normalized for our human nature to desire.
