Life Of Pi: Spirituality and Existence

Last week in my Stories of Diverse Media course, we watched the Life of Pi. Naturally, this caused me to have an existential crisis.

Wisdom and faith are both buried deep in the roots of the story. The story isn’t about (spoiler alert) wrestling a real tiger, but a metaphoric one, that asks the questions of meaning and faith.

This story reminds us that even at our lowest points, we can strive to be positive and find our faith and the meaning of life. This story uncovers the meaning of people, and making sense of a negative situation and surviving it.

The tiger, Richard Parker’s real name is Thirsty, and is not completely ironic that you can be lost in the ocean, surrounded by water and still die of thirst? This is a metaphor for God being all around us, so many of us unable to understand the concept of God and faith.

I’m not going to talk about religion the entire time, don’t worry.

I just never thought this movie would impact me the way it did. I had watched it before in Grade 10, but I didn’t have the revelation that I had this time I watched it.

I think I’ve learned a lot from this film and it’s taught me how to apply its message to my life. It’s so important for movies to make you feel something like this.

I love when art forms are impactful and influential to their audiences like the Life of Pi is for me.

I recommend that everyone watch this movie and contemplate the same questions it made me ask.

Whether you’re a person who has a strong spiritual faith or not, it will make you reconsider how we as being’s function and how we can believe in something to help us persevere through our darkest days.
