My Suitability for Journalism

Journalism Fundamentals has taught me that I can have my quirks and still have a successful career in Journalism.

We met with so many different people who were a diverse selection of people. Their looks, their thoughts and perspectives were all different.

We met with AnnMarie McKinnon, the Associate Publisher at GEIST magazine. Ever since I got a copy of the magazine from my professor Teresa on the first day of class, GEIST has peaked my interest.

The magazine peaked my interest because it was so different from the rest. Their ideas and what they stand for are so much more interesting than the tabloids or any other magazine I’ve seen.

It’s amazing there are magazine like GEIST that I didn’t know existed before college. I didn’t know there were magazine’s where my quirks and interests would be embraced.

As a shy person, journalism fundamentals made me feel less shy in a way. Seeing people who I could relate to, like McKinnon or the women we spoke with at Discourse Media.

I became more comfortable with myself and was certain of myself because of these women who are living out their journalistic dreams, the way I want to.

This course has taught me how to be professional, and how I can use my skills gained in this program to my advantage.

Whether I want to pursue a job at an Arts and Cultures magazine or I want to have a career in radio, this class has given me outlets to test the waters and explore the different career paths I have in mind.

This course has given me skills and reinforced my quirky personality and how to market those factors.

I’m incredibly happy I got the chance to be in this program, and I will remember the lessons it taught me forever.
